This abstract highlights the key characteristics that differentiate atypical depression from typical MDD. Mood reactivity, where positive events bring temporary mood lifts, is a hallmark. Other atypical symptoms include hypersomnia, increased appetite, and rejection sensitivity. The cause of this variation is still being explored, but treatment approaches similar to MDD with potential benefits from specific medications and therapy are available.
